1. How will the frost effect my spraying?
Frost leads to the de-waxing of leaves. This means products which penetrate growing leaves (Chlorotoluron, IPU and others) go directly into the leaf, killing the area. After frosts the plants natural reaction is to produce more wax. Therefore three/five days later the plant has another wax layer. This is true for temperatures in and around 0°C. Frosts of -5°c or below are likely to damage the plant after spraying regardless of wax protection.

2. What should I do if I don’t get all my winter crops drilled?
Seriously assess the cost of production. If your costs show that it will cost you L125/tonne to grow three tonnes of wheat to the acre and the likely price is L90/tonne, fallow or a spring alternative could be the answer.

3. What crops could I drill in the spring?
Attached to the word spring is the term variable! Spring drilling of any crop requires rainfall at the right time namely late June or July. To this end spring wheat, spring beans and spring rape are high risk.

4. My crop is very patchy at the moment, should I re-drill now or wait till spring?
How patchy and how dry is the soil? Patchy rapes = forget until spring. Patchy wheat and dry soil = re-drill. Patchy winter barley = forget until spring.

5. What will a good price for wheat be at harvest?
Your guess is as good as mine!
