November 2008

The Queen’s phrase “horrible year” comes to mind, as I am reliably informed that we are only the odd millimetre short of the wettest in twenty years. This is an excess of over 300 mm! Crops are growing painfully slow, with fortnightly visits not seeing any new leaves emerging

but only an extra centimetre in leaf length!

We are being bombarded with advice on stacking products; Atlantis plus Flufenacet to try and control Blackgrass. Unfortunately this, no doubt sound advice, is difficult to see happening as low Blackgrass emergence, terrible seed beds, and tiny crops conspire to favour later treatments. In terms of overall winter cereal plantings we have reached 90% of our planned area. This has been revised several times and has seen rotational changes. The remaining un-drilled areas look destined to be fallow.
Winter oil seed rape crops are continuing to struggle and my friends from the various gun clubs could have a busy winter trying to control pigeons!  Phoma is present in rape crops although levels are very variable.

Winter beans have been ploughed down and most have received a Pendimethalin pre- emergence spray. Remember to check that you have the SOLA and correct brand!

There is a saying that “the darkest hour is just before dawn” and with the Georgina Downes, High Court victory and the European Union Pesticide Thematic Strategy paper, things looked bleak! However, a 40% fall in phosphate prices and urea trading at L275, there could be a hint of dawn!
